Being more sustainable doesn't mean that you need to find ways to fit a wind turbine in your back garden, or go vegan tomorrow. You can make changes as small as using a bamboo toothbrush, or as big as going zero waste. Everything is a step towards helping our planet. Here at Practical Green Life our aim is to guide you on your journey of sustainability in a way which is manageable for you.
What is Sustainability?
Being sustainable refers to meeting your own needs without compromising the ability for future generations to meet theirs. This has become a topic of discussion in recent years as we are becoming more and more aware of our consumption of resources such as fossil fuels. There are three components to sustainability: environmental conservation, social responsibility, and economic development. Sustainability can often be associated with ecological conservation but it's also about the health of people and communities.
Why should I care about being sustainable?
Everyone benefits from a healthier planet! I think the WWF explains it best saying "We only have one Earth and are utterly dependent on it for our survival and well-being". Humans are consuming their resources at an unsustainable rate, and polluting the world as we do it. Being sustainable not only is better for your health but also for the continuation of modern civilisation and the way we live.
What can we do to help?
This all sounds like a big task if you're the only one trying to solve it. Thankfully many business are trying to become more sustainable and it can be a key part of their business strategies, especially in recent years. You can help support businesses which are being more conscious about their practices and how they affect the environment. But also look at your own lifestyle and shopping habits to see where you can make changes. Like I said you don't need to go vegan tomorrow or at all, but you can see where you can afford to make sustainable swaps. Being conscious of your habits and making others aware is important as we all need to work together to make a change.
Practical Green Life is here to help show you different ways to make sustainable swaps and help you on your journey of being more environmentally conscious!
