Product Review: QA Bamboo Straws

Updated: Nov 8, 2020

Previously you might have had no second thought about using a plastic straw and maybe even grabbed a few extra to go. But in recent years, following the outrage around plastic pollution, we are beginning to recognise that this is not a sustainable option. The UK parliament announced in 2019 that there was to be a ban on the use of plastic straws (to be implemented on April 2020) as the UK is estimated to throw away at least 4.4 billion straws a year. According to National Geographic, there is "Eight million tons of plastic flow into the ocean every year, and straws comprise just 0.025 percent of that".

Companies like QA Bamboo are here to help this crisis and provide green solutions! They make bamboo straws made with 100% bamboo and free from harmful chemicals. Their bamboo is grown naturally and is chemical and pesticide-free, giving you the extra peace of mind that you are not ingesting anything harmful when drinking your cold brew coffee. As bamboo is one of the fastest-growing natural resources our planet has to offer it makes it a brilliant sustainable alternative to other types of wood. Bamboo absorbs much more carbon dioxide than other plants and produces 35% more oxygen than other types of trees. To me it seems like using bamboo over plastic is a no brainer, especially when it comes to straws. QA Bamboo is trying to tackle the plastic straw crisis by making their wonderful straws available wholesale. Think about what positive impact this could have if every restaurant or fast-food chain supplied customers with a bamboo straw rather than a plastic or paper one. We are told that paper is better than plastic, but the paper isn't as good of an alternative as we would like to believe. So surly bamboo is the way to go!

I was lucky enough to be gifted some of QA Bamboo's straws and here is my review:

They have a great range of sizes which means if you are drinking a cocktail, a milkshake or even just a glass of water there will be one that suits the occasion. I have found that I enjoy using a bamboos straw because you don't get an after taste or tang that can come with using some metal straws. They are also very easy to clean and dry out surprisingly quickly and don't go mushy like paper straws (it is also great if you are on the go). I have tried this in a lovely gin and tonic, in a refreshing glass of lime cordial and sparkling water, and of course, tested it with an Mc Donald's Milkshake. I would definitely recommend them. While it is a great reusable option these straws are totally guilt-free if you find you have to throw it away!

If you want to get your self a bamboo straw or are looking to make your business more eco-friendly why not head over to QA Bamboo's website to find out more about them and see what they have available.
